A former teacher and girls basketball coach at Poudre High School is serving a 30-day jail sentence after admitting that she gave tequila to two male students last spring while they were all “chillin’ ” in her car at Horsetooth Reservoir.
Amber Huber, 30, of Loveland, a former physical education teacher, began serving her jail sentence Jan. 4 after she pleaded guilty to felony contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
“I cried when I found out,” said the father of one of the victims. “It’s hard enough raising teenagers. They’re going to drink and do stupid stuff. But when you have a teacher doing it with them?”
He added: “I think education is a sacred trust that we give them. We’re supposed to work together.”
The boy’s father said the way the district handled the investigation revictimized his son because the boy was made to feel like he did something wrong. At one point, he said, athletics officials threatened his son and his friend with benching for a portion of a sports season for violating the district’s alcohol-consumption ban.
Those officials backed down, he said, when he threatened to go public.
“The message they sent was, ‘If you’re going to talk about this, you’re going to get in trouble.’ These boys were made to feel it was their fault,” he said. “(District officials) were more concerned about themselves and their teachers than they are about the students. I’d love to sue their hineys, but that’s a big machine to go up against. I’m so angry.”
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Coloradoan, Huber admitted she gave Patron tequila to two 17-year-old male students in April. The affidavit indicates Huber drove the boys to Horsetooth Reservoir on a Friday night to drink and then took the boys to a McDonald’s before returning them to their car about 1:30 a.m.
